HOW DO I ADJUST MY PACKING? STUFFING BOX
MAINTENANCE
The function of a stuffing box is to provide an
area for the drive shafting to enter the pressurized portion of the pump.
The packing controls the leakage in the stuffing box.
It is important to note that a small amount of leakage is required to
lubricate the packing itself. Too
little and the packing will “burn”. Too
much and the shaft will “wash out” and will no longer be able to accept
packing. Too much leakage can also
cause the lower motor bearing to fail prematurely.
The packing should slowly drip at around 30 to 60 drops per second.
Packing must be checked every day or every other day.
Whenever an adjustment is made the packing should be checked a few hours
later and then again the very next day. It
is very important that the packing be properly maintained.
If the packing needs to be replaced the size to use in these pumps is 3/8
inch square packing. |
